At every major award show, there are always notable trends that hit the carpet. At last night's 87th annual Academy Awards, some trends were pleasant surprises (hello, statement necklaces) and others were timeless, like the array of black-and-white color combos. Julianne Moore (above, left) hit the carpet in a custom Chanel column. Marion Cotillard (above, center) arrived in a honey comb–esque gown by Dior Haute Couture with a modern black bustle at the back. Patricia Arquette (above, left), who is nominated for her role in Boyhood, wore a figure-flattering Rosetta Getty column featuring a one-shoulder white bodice and fitted black skirt.

Shades of Red

A few of our favorite style stars looked to the carpet for inspiration. Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike (above, left) wowed in a structural lace Givenchy number---a look so sexy, it closed out her red-carpet season with a bang. Solange Knowles, graced the carpet in a modern crimson Christian Siriano creation, a look that bridged the gap between avant-garde and red-carpet ready. Meanwhile, Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson turned heads when she arrived in a fiery Saint Laurent column with an ornate jeweled and knotted single shoulder strap.

Statement Necklaces

There was one statement made loudly at the Oscars red carpet, and it was happening above the neck. Cate Blanchett (above, left), a no-fail risk-taker, accessorized her Maison Martin Margiela by John Galliano column for a turquoise Tiffany & Co. bib necklace. Margot Robbie (above, center) added a diamond, sapphire, and beaded blue tassel piece by Van Cleef & Aprels to her sexy Saint Laurent gown. And Behati Prinsloo’s bare shoulders was calling for a necklace! The model chose a dark strand of baubles to accent her Armani dress.

Pale Colors

New mom Zoe Saldana (above, left) showed off her post-baby bod in a custom blush Atelier Versace gown draped at the waist with a full train. Gwyneth Paltrow (above, center) was a vision in a sleek (and sweet) pale pink silk-crepe Ralph & Russo Couture one-shoulder creation featuring a dramatic rosette made of delicate oversize petals in gazar and organza. And Jennifer Aniston (above, right) took a break from her black dresses for the night and stunned in a one-shoulder beaded nude Atelier Versace column with a sexy side slit.

Three-Dimensional Texture

Stars also stood out on the red carpet and turned heads in dynamic super dimensional creations. Lupita Nyong’o (above, left) caused a stir when she stepped out in a stunning custom white-and-ivory pearl and crystal hand-sewn Calvin Klein Collection dress. Felicity Jones (above, center) worked the red carpet in an elegant high-neck gray Alexander McQueen ball gown with stones, pearls, and floral appliques embroidered at the bodice. And finally, Naomi Watts (above, right) shimmered in a gorgeous Armani Prive design with silvery shells and black caviar beads.
